Melville quits Wales

14 April 2012

West Ham defender Andy Melville has retired from international football with Wales.

The 35-year-old made his debut in 1989 and won 65 caps.

He becomes the second Wales player after Gary Speed to quit since manager Mark Hughes left to take charge at Blackburn on a full-time basis two weeks ago.

Melville said: "I have always been very proud to play for my country, but I feel now is the right time to bow out.

"A new manager will need to look at some of the youngsters and I would not wish to stand in their way."
