Messenger delivers Christmas treat

14 April 2012

The six-year-old, five lengths behind Straw Bear in last season's Supreme Novices' Hurdle, had that rival almost 11 lengths back in fourth as he reversed the form in style to provide a 10-1 shock.

Afsoun had led the field at a merry gallop until capsizing at the middle hurdle down the far side, leaving Jazz Messenger in front.

Straw Bear, the 4-6 favourite, flattered as they turned into the straight but then capitulated quickly, leaving Noble Request to chase home the winner.

Straw Bear's trainer Nick Gifford, kissing goodbye to a potential £1million bonus, was very disappointed.

He said: "There is no obvious reason why he's run like that. We'll get him home and have him checked out. Hopefully something will show up."

Niall Slippers' Madden, who rode Numbersixvalverde to Grand National success and made his first ride at Kempton a winning one on Jazz Messenger, said: "I just don't want this year to end."
