Mets pay £30m for pitcher

14 April 2012

The New York Mets are signing baseball superstar Pedro Martinez in a £30million four-year deal.

The pitcher from the Dominican Republic helped Boston win the World Series.

Martinez said: "I only hope to honour my contract and to fulfil the expectations. The team and I are happy with everything.

"The bigger the contract, the bigger the responsibility. My heart will always be with the Boston fans. I hope that everyone who truly loves me will still support me now that I won't be with the Red Sox."
