Michael Phelps hoping to eclipse Spitz's Olympic gold record

Michael Phelps is on course to achieve his goal of breaking Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record of seven Olympic golds in a Games by qualifying in the U.S. trials in Omaha for eight swimming events for Beijing.

But none of America's female swimmers managed to shift Britain's Becky Adlington from the number one spot in the world rankings at 800m freestyle.

She will almost certainly now go into the Olympics with the fastest time - 8min 19.22sec.

Meanwhile, another Olympic hopeful, William Fox-Pitt, one of Britain’s eventing team, took three of the top five places on Sunday — on his trio of possible Olympic mounts — at the Barbury Castle International in Wiltshire.
