Millar's future is up in air after two-year ban

14 April 2012

David Millar was today considering whether to announce if he will continue cycling following his two-year ban for doping offences - and if he will risk taking his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The 27-year-old admitted to taking banned drug EPO and was also stripped of his 2003 world time trial title and fined approximately £900. He may delay an announcement about returning to racing after the ban.

The Scottish cyclist was found guilty of intentional doping by an independent disciplinary panel sitting for British Cycling. The panel decided on Millar's punishment after questioning the disgraced former Cofidis rider, who now faces important decisions on his cycling career.

Although he has no right of appeal he could take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but the cost of assembling a legal team may put him off.

Also, he privately admitted to judge Richard Pallain last month that he took the drug.

In a statement to the police, he declared: "I had always dreamed of becoming a world champion; I had reached that aim but I had cheated.

"I drugged myself because I was a prisoner of myself, of fame and money. I believe that those two syringes were the witnesses of how ashamed I felt to have used drugs.

"I am not proud to have drugged myself; I am not happy about it. I was a prisoner of the person I had become."

Two years away from competing would still give Millar time to resurrect his career. Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong is 32.
