Millwall and City bar travelling fans

13 April 2012

Millwall and Manchester City have banned away fans from matches between the two clubs this season amid fears of hooliganism.

The First Division rivals, who are due to meet on 6 October at The Den and 30 January at Maine Road, are desperate to avoid a repeat of violent scenes which marred their last meetings.

Millwall fans fought running battles with police outside The Den after the clubs' meeting in 1998 and there were further incidents involving both sets of supporters after the return fixture that season.

Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis and his City counterpart David Bernstein have taken a joint decision not to sell tickets to travelling fans.

A statement released by the two chairman said: "After careful consideration and full consultation with the football authorities both Manchester City FC and Millwall FC have decided to limit this season's fixtures between the two clubs to home supporters only.

"This decision has been taken on intelligence and information that the fixtures may be used as a catalyst for football troublemakers. Both clubs will screen the away matches live at their grounds.

Millwall goalkeepers Tony Warner and Willy Gueret have signed new extended contracts.
