Mixed feelings for Levein

Craig Levein was delighted when Darren Fletcher flew to Switzerland to bolster Scotland's Euro 2012 qualifying hopes - only to discover striker Kenny Miller had lost his battle for fitness ahead of Saturday's game against Liechtenstein.

The Scotland boss had ruled captain Fletcher out of the game in Vaduz due to a bout of tonsillitis but on Friday morning, Fletcher caught a flight from Manchester to Zurich where he was picked up by Scottish FA officials and driven straight to the team hotel in St Gallen.

Almost at the same time as Fletcher checked in, the Scotland medical team were ruling out Miller, who will be replaced by Brighton striker Craig Mackail-Smith after failing to overcome his groin injury and Levein said: "It's a great boost to have Darren here, especially after losing Kenny for tomorrow."

He added: "He has a huge influence on the team and his presence alone will give the players a lift.

"We will assess him tomorrow but it is a testament to the player that he flew over as soon as he felt ready."

Earlier in the day Levein caused surprise at the pre-match press conference when he confirmed that Fletcher would be making the journey after all.

"He feels better," said Levein.

"If the medical team gives him the thumbs-up he will play, if not, he is 100 per cent certain to be involved on Tuesday (against Spain)."

Miller did not complete the training session held over the border in Vaduz, and the decision was taken not to risk him although Levein is hoping he will be fit for Tuesday evening.

"Kenny Miller will not play against Liechtenstein," said a statement on the SFA website. "He will continue to be assessed ahead of Tuesday's match against Spain."
