Morgan to miss World Cup

England batsman Eoin Morgan is to miss the World Cup because of a broken finger and will be replaced by Ravi Bopara.

Morgan missed the final one-day international of the recently completed series against Australia after fracturing the middle finger of his left hand, a problem he first became aware of in the fourth one-day international in Adelaide.

"Eoin Morgan won't be going to the World Cup. He needs to be operated on - that's a serious loss," said team director Andy Flower. "But Ravi Bopara, who is an exciting young cricketer in his own right, will be joining us."

Morgan was one of a number of England's World Cup squad who picked up injuries on the Ashes tour.

Graeme Swann, Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shahzad, Paul Collingwood, Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett all picked up knocks of varying seriousness in Australia.

Flower said there was "good news" regarding the majority of the injured players, but the fact that Morgan - perhaps the key cog in England's limited-overs side - is missing will be a big blow to England's World Cup hopes.

However, Flower insisted his replacement Bopara, who has been with the England Lions in the West Indies, will bring plenty to the squad.

"No-one is irreplaceable," Flower added. "Ravi Bopara is a very talented and exciting player.

"He will also bring a bit of medium-pace bowling to help out the captain. We're confident the 15 players we've got out there will gel."
