Mourinho rejected chance to veto Grant's appointment

13 April 2012

Jose Mourinho had the chance to block Avram Grant's appointment to Chelsea's coaching staff during talks with the club's billionaire benefactor Roman Abramovich.

But the manager gave his blessing to the arrival of Grant after a meeting with the Chelsea directors two weeks ago.

Grant spent last season working with Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth. Mourinho had been uncertain about the appointment of the former Israel coach but has been assured by Grant that he has no intention of undermining the manager's role.

The Chelsea chief, who is preparing for the final game of their American tour against LA Galaxy this evening, said: "If I say I am happy, then I am happy. If I wasn't, you would see me snarling.

"Avram wants to help. He does not want to create problems for people. My work is the same as before. Avram makes my life easier and is a good guy. I'm happy to have him in our structure."

Chelsea go into the game against David Beckham's club with injury worries over skipper John Terry (fractured toe) and Arjen Robben (knee) but both are likely to feature at some stage.

Mourinho is also injured. He damaged a hamstring while playing in goal as Abramovich and most of the first-team squad watched a Chelsea staff XI draw 1-1 with a team of British journalists.
