Murray courts controversy

Andy Murray is set to turn his attention to the summer grass-court season sooner than he would have liked after withdrawing from the Hamburg Masters with a serious wrist injury.

Although a scan revealed no broken bones, Murray has suffered tendon damage and is now highly unlikely to regain fitness in time for the French Open at Roland Garros later this month.

Murray told BBC Radio Five Live: "I'm not depressed, it's just bad luck with injuries. It's been one thing after another but hopefully this one won't be too bad and I can get on the court pretty soon."

He added: "I was playing awesome, probably the best I had this year. To be 5-1 up against a guy like him (Filippo Volandri) on clay - when I keep getting told my clay-court game is not very good - I felt I showed in six games that I can play pretty well on the surface.

"It's a little disappointing for this clay-court season but I just look forward to the next one."

Murray has now completed just one match on the ATP Tour since reaching the semi-finals of the Miami Masters Series in March. His injury woes probably played a part in his pronouncement that he may consider withdrawing from Davis Cup.

Murray is next due to play for Great Britain against Croatia on the number one court at Wimbledon in September and his absence would harm his team's chances of victory.

But the Lawn Tennis Association, who are eager to avoid any confrontation over the issue, will hope that Murray's comments were made on the spur of the moment and he will be persuaded to play.
