Andy Murray will head back to London on Saturday to begin his preparations for the World Tour Finals after his run in the Paris Masters was ended at the quarter-final stage.

The British number one was beaten 6-2 2-6 6-3 by Gael Monfils, who now progresses to face world number two Roger Federer in the semi-finals.

The Scot has been struggling with a wrist injury throughout the week, and said: "I just tried to keep the points shortish. It worked in the middle set but didn't really work in the third set as well."

He added: "Obviously the atmosphere is great and you can lift your game a little bit.

"I wasn't feeling perfect going into the match and it can lift you. We had some good points. They support their home player very, very well here."

Federer secured his place with a routine win over Jurgen Melzer.

The Swiss was in no mood to hang around in the first set and broke serve at the first two available opportunities to help him take it 6-1. Melzer found his rhythm in the second set and held serve through to a tie-break, which Federer won to take the match 6-1 7-6 (7/4).

Federer, who set a personal record of 18 aces in a two-set match told www.atpworldtour.com afterwards: "I thought I served well the whole match.

"In the second he was able to play a bit more solid overall, and I think he served a bit better."

The other semi-final will be contested by Robin Soderling, who beat Andy Roddick 7-5 6-4 and the unseeded Michael Llodra, who got the better of Nikolay Davydenko 7-5 6-1.
