14 April 2012

British number one Andy Murray may have breezed through his first round match at the Australian Open but he knows he will not have it so easy in the future.

His searing start - which matched the temperatures at Melbourne Park - was in direct contrast to last year when he exited at the first attempt to Juan Ignacio Chela.

"Obviously I'll play against tougher and tougher opponents," said the world number 16, who has never faced Verdasco - ranked 19 places below him.

"It's going to be really difficult. Verdasco has won against guys like (Andy) Roddick and is a tough guy to play against.

"But I feel like if I play like I did and a little bit better, then I've got a good chance of winning."

Despite his devastating first-round display Murray played down his chances in the first grand slam of the year.

"I've never been past the fourth round of a grand slam before," said the Dunblane teenager.

"It's a huge jump between fourth round and winning it. I hope in two, three years' time is when I'll consistently be a contender for grand slams."
