Nadal advances as Hewitt crashes out

12 April 2012

Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round of the US Open after his second-round opponent Janko Tipsarevic retired in the third set through injury.

Trailing Nadal 6-2 6-3 3-2 the unseeded Serb was forced to retire after reaggravating a rib injury he incurred months ago.

Had he not retired, it would have only been a matter of minutes before a much more comfortable Nadal finished his night's work. The Spaniard appeared to be moving significantly better after showing the effects of his left knee tendinitis during his first round win.

"I felt better today," said Nadal. "I had more confidence in the knees."

"I'm not one hundred percent yet. I'm much better than the first day. I hope to continue improving for the next match."

Lleyton Hewitt didn't have so much luck as he crashed out of the US Open after suffering a 6-4 4-6 4-6 2-6 defeat to Agustin Calleri.

After winning the first set, Hewitt dropped three straight to lose to the unseeded Argentinian. The seeded Aussie failed to punish Calleri for his 37 unforced errors. Calleri helped himself with his play at the net where he converted on 22 of 27 approaches.

Number 15 David Ferrer of Spain advanced with a 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-2 triumph over France's Florent Serra.
