Newcastle lead Premier League chase for Rangers defender Cuellar

13 April 2012

Rangers face a summer battle to keep Carlos Cuellar at Ibrox, with Newcastle among Premiership suitors admiring the Spaniard.

Kevin Keegan was at Ibrox last night to watch the central defender - the Newcastle manager's second visit inside a month, after he and assistant Terry McDermott attended the 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen in the previous round.

Keegan is on record as saying there are a number of SPL players who could make the leap to the Premiership and Northern Ireland international Steven Davis, on loan to Rangers from Fulham, is another being monitored by the Geordies.

But it is Cuellar's form that has made him both a hot property and a top tip for Player of the Year awards - and Rangers are now almost certain to receive bids for the Spaniard when the summer transfer window opens.

Tottenham raided Glasgow to land Alan Hutton for £9million in January and the one certainty is that the central defender's price will rise above the £2.2m paid to Osasuna last July.
