Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay believes this week’s trip to London came at the perfect time for his side, and says he had fun unveiling a new trick play in front of the Wembley crowd.

Last year’s Super Bowl runners-up took their record for the season to 5-3 with a comfortable 24-10 victory over the winless Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

The highlight came midway through the second quarter, as an audacious move ended in a 65-yard touchdown for the outstanding Cooper Kupp to give the Rams a lead that they would never surrender.

And when asked whether he got an extra kick out of unleashing the play for a novel audience, McVay said: “Damn right, when it works out like that! It's as fun for me as it is for the fans. In fact, I bet it's a little bit more fun for me than it is for the fans.

“It was great to be able to see the players do that, I thought they did a great job executing versus that look and to be able to cap it off with a touchdown at a time when we needed it was a big response.”

The Rams will now return to Los Angeles for a bye week, bringing to an end a ten-day road stint, after the franchise opted to remain on the east coast following last week’s win over the Atlanta Falcons, in the hope of lessening the logistical challenge of a transatlantic transition.

Prior to that game, the defending NFC champions had lost three on the spin, the first such run of McVay’s tenure, and the 33-year-old says the trip has helped his men reset.

“I thought it came at a good time to get away and have a kind of camp type setting in the middle of the season where it was just about us,” McVay said. “Getting to spend a little more time together than you would otherwise.

“Our guys responded in the right way and to be able to go 2-0 in that stretch is exactly what you do.”
