Nicol stunned by Italian Bianchetti

14 April 2012

World champion Peter Nicol suffered a stunning defeat to Italian Davide Bianchetti in the second round of the men's World Open Squash Tournament.

Bianchetti, 26, ended top seed Nicol's run with a 11-15, 12-15, 15-7, 15-4, 15-10 in 67 minutes.

"This is the greatest win of my career and my parents will be as much elated as I am," said a beaming Bianchetti, the No. 32 seed, who will meet Frenchman Gregory Gaultier in the next round. "I couldn't move properly in the third set. I was tired and I knew I was not going to win the match," said a dejected looking Nicol.

The world No1 said he was feeling weak due to an upset stomach.

"I have had stomach problems since the middle of last week, it has not cleared as yet and I feel quite weak," said the Scot, who now represents England.

Defending champion David Palmer, however, shrugged off a thigh injury and stormed into the third round with an easy victory over Mohammad Azlan Iskander.

The Australian, seeded third, overcame Malaysian rival 15-8, 15-9, 15-11.

"Nice to come through with a straight game win," Palmer said.

Pakistan's hopes were virtually dashed when Mansoor Zaman lost to Finland's Olli Tuominen in another second-round match.
