No England recall for Vaughan

12 April 2012

Former England captain Michael Vaughan is among a raft of high-profile omissions from the first npower Test squad to take on West Indies at Lord's next week.

Fellow centrally-contracted players Ian Bell and Steve Harmison have also been left out of the 12-man party while Owais Shah has been axed after playing the last three Tests in the Caribbean.

Essex batsman Ravi Bopara has been picked to fill the number three position after hitting a hundred against the West Indians in Barbados last month. And in a party of bold selections, uncapped pace-bowling pair Tim Bresnan and Graham Onions will provide the back-up to certain picks James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

"This is very exciting for the two young fast bowlers to be included in the squad for a Lord's Test match and sends a message to all county players that if they put in consistently good performances they will get recognised," said national selector Geoff Miller.

"Both have had good starts to this season and had been close to Test match selection on a number of occasions.

"They have earned their place in the party."
