No hurry for Murray

12 April 2012

Andy Murray is playing down his chances of success at the US Open over the next fortnight.

The Scot heads into the final grand slam of the year in New York high on confidence after rising to 19 in the world rankings and earning a seeding of 17. His form in recent weeks has seen him become only the second player to beat world number one Roger Federer this year - but the 19-year-old is not getting carried away.

"I'll have a bit more belief going into grand slams, although I don't think physically I'm good enough to win a grand slam yet," he said. "It may take a few years but my game is getting better all the time."

He added: "Physically, I'll get stronger. To win a grand slam you have to be in unbelievable shape.

"I can play five-set matches but playing them back to back is what you have to do.

"If I was to win every match in straight sets then, yes, I probably could do it. But if I have a lot of long matches, then I'm probably not strong enough yet."

Murray is not in action until Tuesday when he faces American qualifier Robert Kendrick.

Fellow Britons Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman - who play each other - and qualifier Josh Goodall must also wait until the second day.
