Oliveira will not be axed

Coach Antonio Oliveira is not in danger of the sack even if Portugal lose to South Korea tomorrow and exit the World Cup, said the country's football federation.

Oliveira's contract runs until after the 2004 European Championships and federation chief Gilberto Madail said: "We haven't lost confidence in him.

"Our great aim was to reach the World Cup and we achieved that. People want us to do well here, but that's icing on the cake."

But Madail also said he would not hold Oliveira to his contract if the coach received a good offer from elsewhere.
