Olympia prefers its independence

Olympia, the home of the ancient Olympics was staging the shot put competitions today, and wants to break away from Greece.

Mayor John Skoularikis is keen for the town to win semi-independent status like the Vatican City in Rome.

Skoularikis was expected to bring up the subject when VIPS and Greek politicians visited ancient Olympia for the men's and women's competitions.

He said: "The Athens Olympic Committee got all the money from the sponsors. They just leave us the rubbish."
