1930: The first British Empire Games opened in Hamilton, Canada. The Games were
renamed the Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954 and the British Commonwealth Games in 1970.
1948: Legendary baseball player Babe Ruth, who made his name with the New York
Yankees, died aged 53.
1995: US amateur champion Tiger Woods, 19, was named in the American Walker Cup team.
1996: Former world middleweight title contender Herol Graham, after four years out of the ring, was cleared to fight again by the British Boxing Board of Control a month short of his 37th birthday.
1998: Vijay Singh claimed his first major title with victory in the US PGA Championship at the Sahalee Country Club near Seattle.
1999: The IAAF refused to accept a UK Athletics decision to clear Scottish sprinter Dougie Walker of doping allegations.
2000: Gary Butcher claimed four wickets in four balls in a spell of five for 18 in 7.3 overs in a County Championship match for Surrey against Derbyshire at The Oval.
