Andy Murray had problems with his back as he retired from his match against Marcel Granollers in the second round of the Rome Masters.

Murray (above today) lost the first set 6-3 and then, while trailing 2-1 to the world No37 in the second set, called on the trainer for treatment.

Murray went onto claim the second set 7-6 before withdrawing.

The French Open starts a week on Sunday but the British No1 has been struggling on clay, which is his least favourite surface.

Last week, he exited the Madrid Open at the quarter-final stage losing to Tomas Berdych and prior to that was beaten by Stanislas Wawrinka in the last 16 of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Murray is anxious for more court time and said this week: “Practice is important for me on this surface more than most because I need to get used to the movements again.”
