Boat Race 2013: You could say we’re hungry for success

Day Two and some of the crew are getting hungry. When we’re training at university you just eat whatever you can fit in. Two breakfasts, lunch and a really big dinner is the norm. When we put our minds to it we’re all pretty ridiculous eaters. I’m sure some of the guys could eat two whole chickens in one serving.

But in this final week we’re not eating as much as we possibly can because we’re not doing as much mileage.

Power to weight is really important so we don’t want to throw that all away by putting on a couple of pounds.

Equally you need to be as fuelled up as you can, so it’s all pretty carefully monitored. Breakfast will be light, just some toast or cereal, nothing too extreme. Our first lunch yesterday was a pasta bake and the evening meal was chicken, chilli, stew — all full of protein and whatever the hotel serves up for us.

As soon as you get off the water you want to make sure you don’t touch food or anything that could make you ill.

I’m not exactly superstitious but I get paranoid in the week running up to the race. You want to look after yourself, there’s alcoholic hand rub left, right and centre. It’s in the bus, hotel and boathouse — it’s everywhere. Anything to reduce the risk!

Our first morning out on the river was cold. The bitter weather combined with the wind roughs up the boat so we’ve been getting some water in which makes life more unpleasant.

It’s definitely more enjoyable rowing in the warmth when the water is nice and flat but we get on with it.
