CHARTRES, FRANCE - JULY 21: Bradley Wiggins of Great Britain and SKY Procycling punches the air with delight as he celebrates winning the stage and securing the yellow jersey of the general classification during stage nineteen of the 2012 Tour de France, a 53.5km time trial from Bonneval to Chartres on July 21, 2012 in Chartres, France.

Sir Bradley Wiggins today confirmed that he will act as Team Sky’s No2 behind Chris Froome at this year’s Tour de France.

The 2012 Tour winner told l’Equipe: “I would love to win a second Tour and if I get the chance to do it, not necessarily this season, that would be great. But it looks as if Chris will be the leader this year. That doesn’t mean I’ll be riding 200km a day on the front of the bunch for him. We will be there together as he was last year with me in the mountains.

“Something could happen to Chris . . . he could be sick, he could crash as happened to me in 2011 when we ended up without a team leader.”

Wiggins, who won the time trial at the London Olympics, also confirmed that the Giro d’Italia is his priority this year. He said: “The Giro is my new challenge, my inspiration, the new fire burning inside me. I think winning it, for certain aspects, will be more difficult than winning the Tour.

“It wasn’t a sudden choice. After winning the Tour, which I had sought for many years, I asked myself, ‘Now what do I do?’ and I started thinking about the Giro.”

“In terms of cycling history, the Giro is just as important as the Tour but it has a more human aspect.

“The Tour has maybe gotten too big.”
