Bradley Wiggins set to miss Tour de France

Race is over: Sir Bradley Wiggins won’t be competing this year ‘as things stand’

Sir Bradley Wiggins today gave up on his hope of riding at this year’s Tour de France on home soil.

The Team Sky rider admitted that unless something happened to team leader Chris Froome at next week’s Tour warm-up race, the Criterium du Dauphine, he had no chance of making the nine-man line-up despite his impressive form.

The 34-year-old, who won the Tour in 2012 but was absent last year as Froome triumphed, has made no secret of his desire to be part of the team for the race — which begins in Yorkshire next month — despite a fractious relationship with Froome.

But, after being omitted from Sky’s Dauphine line-up, Wiggins said: “I think I can tell you that as things stand I will not be riding the Tour. After Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of California, I felt good physically. I was ready to go [to the Tour]. But these last few weeks, it has become more and more clear that unless something happens to Froome at the Dauphine, I will not be at the Tour. There we go.

“I’ve had my doubts since April. I hoped my performances would get me a place. But then after California, I knew they were all off on an altitude camp but I wasn’t involved nor was I involved in the Tour reconnaissance rides.”
