Brooklyn Nets v Atlanta Hawks: Kyle Korver bids for 108th straight game with a three-pointer

Blink and you might even miss it but one of the fascinating sub-plots in tonight’s NBA clash between the Atlanta Hawks and the Brooklyn Nets at London’s 02 Arena will be whether the flight across the Atlantic has any effect on Kyle Korver’s shooting.

When the 32-year-old Hawk nailed a three-point shot against the LA Clippers last December, he broke Dana Barros’s NBA record that had stood for nearly 20 years.

Barros scored at least one three-point shot in 89 consecutive games but, having overtaken him, Korver has extended the run to 107 games, the last of which was in a 108-101 defeat at Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night.

The record will be on the 6ft 7in shooting guard’s mind tonight but he’s equally focused on improving the Hawks’ recent form — two wins from six games since the turn of the year. He said: “I was pretty nervous when I was about to break the record because it has been going for so long.

“I didn’t want to get that close and then not get it. My job is to knock down threes, so it’s about trying to do my job well more than trying to keep a streak going.

“I don’t ever want to take a bunch of bad shots just to get that one three. I don’t want to sacrifice a team win but luckily I’m on a team where the guys are not selfish, set good screens and we play really well together. It could end any day.”

Like the Hawks, the Nets lost their last game before heading to London — 96-80 in Toronto — but that was their only defeat during a stellar month which included seeing off the Miami Heat 104-95.

The sides met in Brooklyn last week, the Nets winning 91-86, and Hawks coach Mike Budenhozler admits that game could have a bearing on tonight’s clash.

“We’ll be a bit more familiar with what they do but it will be the same for them, too! Players’ attention is usually a little bit sharper, too.”

His opposite number, Jason Kidd, added: “Last week’s game will definitely have an effect on tonight’s. They’ll want to beat us but we’ll want to hold serve. It’s two teams that are very familiar with each other but being in a place you’ve never been before is going to be a great experience.”

Brooklyn Nets take on Atlanta Hawks at the O2 Arena tonight as part of NBA Global Games London 2014. Watch the game live on BT Sport 1 from 7.45pm.
