Drained Novak Djokovic falls in the final

Novak Djokovic admitted the death of his grandfather left him so emotionally drained he “just wasn’t there” as he was beaten by Rafael Nadal in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The world No1 learned on Thursday that his grandfather, Vladimir, had passed away and although he won three matches after that, yesterday’s clash against Nadal proved a step too far.

After losing 6-3, 6-1 to the Spaniard, Djokovic said: “I had no emotional energy left. It was a bad day. I just wasn’t there. I’ve never been caught up in this kind of emotional situation before. It’s been a very difficult week for me.”
