Walt Frazier believes London could be hosting this season’s NBA champions when the New York Knicks face the Detroit Pistons at the O2 in January.

The Knicks - led by London 2012 Olympic gold medalists Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler - are second in the Eastern Conference following last night’s 121-100 victory over the Pistons.

They have not won the NBA title since 1973 but Frazier, who was part of that championship-winning team, believes they can end that 40-year drought this season.

He said: “I think they have got a good shot this year, especially the way they are going now and if they can stay healthy. They have an excellent chance.

“It’s been one of the best in the history of the club. We got off to a good start and I was actually surprised because we have got a lot of new faces.

Veterans Marcus Camby and Jason Kidd joined the team last summer and have played key roles in the Knicks 9-3 start to the season.

Frazier said: “I thought it would take longer to get the cohesion together and the continuity but the coach has done an excellent job getting them to play together a team.”
