Olympic champion Nicola Adams says she “can’t wait” to start her professional career. The double Olympic champion is turning pro aged 34 in a bid to follow her hero Muhammad Ali to the top of world boxing. She will make her debut at the Manchester Arena on April 8.

Adams spoke as she launched the Prudential cycle ride. She will join thousands on a 46-mile route from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to The Mall on July 30.

She said of her career move: “I can’t wait. I’ll be nervous going into the ring but that is ok, it gives you an edge. The training’s intense. I’ve been at the top of the amateur game... it’s the same pressure that you never want to lose.”

Entry for the 2017 Prudential Ride London-Surrey 46 is by public ballot. The ballot is now open and closes when 20,000 riders have registered, or at 5pm on May 12, whichever is the earlier. “When I take my Doberman for a walk he runs alongside and I cycle, it’s a key part of my training,” said Adams.
