When an American fan began heckling Henrik Stenson during practice on Thursday, the Open champion thought he'd give the US supporter a taste of the pressure on the course after inviting him to hole a 12-foot putt in front of the throng of people watching.

To make things that bit more interesting, Justin Rose even wagered $100 (£77) on the putt, which Stenson and Rory McIlroy had both failed to make.

It was understandable then when the American fan took his time to steady himself ahead of the shot although what wasn't expected for the European team was seeing the supporter rattle the putt straight into the hole - which sparked wild celebrations from the crowd at Hazeltine National.

"I thought it might make it a bit more real for him, but clearly not," Rose said afterwards. "The boys were cupping out, missing it low and this guy just got the ball out and ripped it into the middle. Fair play to him and he celebrated in style.

"It's fun. We are doing what we should be doing out here, having fun. We are preparing, and we are focusing. But you have to enjoy it. That's how you get the most out of it."
