Serena Williams eases past Barbora Zahlavova Strycova

All power and panache: Serena Williams
10 April 2012

Serena Williams was never built to be a ballerina and tumbled to the court to emphasise the point during her 6-0,6-4 second round win over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova at the Australian Open today - the 500th victory of her career.

It meant 12th seed Williams extended her winning streak to 16 matches at Melbourne Park, where she won back-to-back titles in 2009-10 but could not play last year due to injury.

The younger Williams sister badly sprained her ankle two weeks ago at a warm-up tournament, which made her fall today all the more worrying late in the match.

However, Williams who has her ankles strapped, said: "It's fine. I just have wobbly ankles. I wasn't meant to be a ballerina or anything."

Her 500th win on tour, still leaves her trailing sister Venus who has a 598-147 win / loss record on tour but is missing from Melbourne due to a long term illness.. Serena's record is now 500-104 and the power is still in her game, making the American one of the favourites to take the title.

Maria Sharapova, another former champion, was even more impressive accounting for American Jamie Hampton 6-0,6-1 while Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova moved into the third round with a 6-2,2-6,6-4 win over Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.
