Winter Olympics 2014 diary: Putin on a performance as the Olympic Village People

19 February 2014

Vladimir Putin has been pilloried by many for Russia’s anti-gay law.

But now one artist, who on Twitter goes by the name of Jim’ll Paint It has raised it a notch with his own remaking of the Village People, in which Putin appears as all six members of the late 1970s band, made famous for the hit YMCA. To check out his other work, go to: twitter.com/Jimllpaintit

Curling uncovered…

Have you been astounded by the shot-making of British skip David Murdoch in Sochi or similarly blown away by the ever-colourful trousers worn by the Norway team that were knocked out by Team GB on Monday? Well, some of the stars of the men’s game have opted for rather fewer clothes than usual for a calendar, on sale to raise money for multiple charities. For you curling enthusiasts out there, it’s available from www.menofcurling.com

Not a champagne moment

Hosts Russia have had their fair share of success in the medal table and something of a habit at Russia House has begun, which apparently lends itself to former traditions. Each gold medallist is invited to dunk their medal in a glass of champagne and duly knock back the bubbles. Figure skater Maxim Trankov, however, proved a bit of a party pooper, opting not to bring either of his gold medals with him. Either that, or he didn’t trust himself with them after a drink of two.

Britain’s frozen assets

Ever wondered what the Winter Olympics might be like with all the competitors in Sochi completely naked? Okay, probably not but the organisers of the Naked Sledding World Championships in Magdeburg, Germany, clearly have. It’s an event which doesn’t need a whole lot of description. Eighteen women and 26 men compete in just their pants, boots and helmets as they throw themselves down a 50-metre course. Among those 44 entrants, Britain had two representatives in Thomas Chrusciel and Holly Garshong, sadly neither of them coming away with the €1,000 prize.
