Pardew on the defensive

13 April 2012

Alan Pardew will step up his search for players in both full-back positions when the transfer window opens later this week,

writes Ken Dyer.

The West Ham manager, who was much happier with his side following their 2-0 victory at Nottingham Forest, will make a new left-back his top priority.

He is keen to take veteran Charlton defender Chris Powell on loan but the Premiership club are reluctant to agree.

Pardew is also after a right-back as he looks for a push up the table after dropping out of the play-off positions.

West Ham are still hoping that Jermain Defoe's five-match suspension, following his red card against Walsall, will be commuted by the FA this week.

If not however, Defoe is due to start his third suspension of the season this weekend. He proved his worth by scoring his side's second at the City Ground, Marlon Harewood having opened the scoring against his old club in the second minute.
