New Hull manager Nigel Pearson hailed his players' spirit to record an opening-day win over Swansea amid ongoing financial wrangles at the npower Championship club.

Pearson saw his team record a comfortable 2-0 triumph in their first game back in the second tier thanks to goals from teenage loan signing John Bostock and captain Ian Ashbee.

"With the circumstances as they have been over the past couple of weeks, for the players to have coped with first-day nerves, and the way they have handled it has been admirable," said Pearson.

Concern remains about the club's parlous finances, with the prospect of administration lingering after reports suggested the Premier League were planning to withhold a parachute payment.

But Pearson added: "Winning games is always nice and I know there's more to come from us. We are short in certain areas but from day one I've been delighted with the players' application and their willingness to take new things on board.

"Their spirits are pretty good at the moment. The test will be when we have knockbacks and have to deal with disappointment but I've been very pleased."

12 players have left the KC Stadium over the summer to balance the books and Pearson is hoping to add to his threadbare squad.

He added: "If circumstances allow me to add, then I will. Although we've not got the immediate situations resolved, there is still work to be done.

"I'll add when, and if, I can and if that means taking away from certain areas that may be the case."

He concluded: "We've won one game, and that's good because it gets us off to a solid start. It's one out of 46."
