Playing nice is not on the David Haye agenda

13 April 2012

David Haye has refused to tone down the sickening attacks he has made on world heavyweight champions Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko.

The Londoner was criticised last week when he turned up for a press conference in Germany wearing a tee-shirt portraying him in a boxing ring holding aloft the severed heads of the Ukrainian brothers.

Haye, the former undisputed cruiserweight title holder, wore it again this morning when he and Wladimir met in London to publicise their heavyweight showdown at the Veltins-Arena in Schalke, Germany, on 20 June.

The fight, for 33-year-old Wladimir's IBF and WBO belts, hardly needs hyping as 47,000 tickets for the 60,000-capacity ground have already been sold.

But Haye, 28, continued to insult an opponent who has lost just three of his 55 fights, saying: "I don't respect him. In order to earn my respect he will have to beat me and that is not going to happen.

"He has beaten nobody fresh and alive, and he doesn't fight like a true heavyweight champion.

He's got a decent jab and lots of physical tools, but his grab-jab tactics won't work against me. I want to get under his skin."

Haye, with just one defeat in 23 fights, insisted he will not be intimidated by Klitschko, who at 6ft 6in is four inches taller and will come in at least two stones heavier.

But Klitschko said: "Haye is trying to make himself famous by saying and doing things before the fight takes place but I will take delight in punishing him slowly. I will hurt him until the 12th round and then I will knock him out."
