Pleat goes Dutch to keep tabs on talented duo

Tottenham checked on the progress of two of Europe's talented young midfielders at the weekend as their rebuilding plans continue to gather pace in preparation for the arrival of the club's new manager this summer.

Acting boss David Pleat flew to Holland to watch Heerenveen's Finnish midfielder Mika Vayrynen and former Arsenal target Robin van Persie of Feyenoord.

Both youngsters played in a 2-2 draw between their clubs in Rotterdam and Spurs will continue to monitor their progress as they wait for the arrival of Italian national coach Giovanni Trapattoni.

Despite reports suggesting Trapattoni has agreed to stay on with Italy after this summer's Euro 2004 campaign, Spurs remain confident he will join them.

Arsenal made a bid for attacking midfielder Van Persie, 20, two months ago but chose to spend their money on Jose Reyes instead. Feyenoord have failed to thrash out a new deal with Van Persie and his present deal is due to expire in 2005.

The player's agent, Erwin Boonacker, said: "Robin has informed Feyenoord that he will not extend his contract."

Van Persie is predominantly a left winger but can be deployed as a central striker.

Heerenveen playmaker Vayrynen has also had a fine season for his club.

The 22-year-old midfielder said: "I want to move forward and changing club in the summer is one option."
