Rain hampers final day at Wanderers

South Africa and Australia were frustrated by morning rain on the final day of the finely-poised second Test in Johannesburg.

Wet weather and dark clouds at the Wanderers meant there was no play possible before lunch, which was taken early in the hope there could be plenty of action later in the day.

Australia were due to resume their second-innings run chase on 142 for three, needing a further 168 runs to win the match and tie the two-match series, having lost the opener by eight wickets in Cape Town.

Half-centuries from Usman Khawaja (65) and Ricky Ponting (54 not out) put Australia firmly in contention to haul themselves back on level terms, with Ponting and his successor as captain Michael Clarke the unbeaten batsmen heading into the final.

Clarke was one not out, having faced just one ball on Sunday evening after Khawaja fell to Imran Tahir just before the close of play.

Australia's 18-year-old paceman Pat Cummins, on his debut, returned bowling figures of six for 79 as South Africa were dismissed for 339 in their second innings.
