Ramprakash back, but Surrey struggle

David Lloyd13 April 2012

Mark Ramprakash sent England good news and bad from Headingley today while helping Surrey to make a flying start against Yorkshire.

Ramprakash, who missed the first Ashes Test with a hamstring injury, confirmed that there is now nothing wrong with either his fitness or his form by racing to 51 at virtually a run a ball.

But the bulk of Ramprakash's scoring shots in this C&G Trophy fourth round tie came at the expense of Darren Gough and Craig White.

The two certainties to face Australia at Lord's next week were repeatedly punished for their lack of accuracy on a green-tinged pitch that looked as though it ought to help the seamers.

Chris Silverwood and Ryan Sidebottom, possible candidates for a Test recall, also failed to put the ball in the right place often enough in the early stages after Yorkshire had chosen to bowl first in blustery conditions.

Surrey romped to 126 for one from 23 overs, but then fell away almost as quickly.

Ramprakash gloved a catch behind while sweeping at Darren Lehmann.

Ian Ward spoiled a carefully constructed half-century by running out Alec Stewart, and Alistair Brown sliced a drive off spinner Richard Dawson to backward point.

Adam and Ben Hollioake fell cheaply in a good second spell from Silverwood, before Sidebottom ended Ward's hope of a century as he was clean bowled for 81.

White then made up for his earlier wayward bowling by taking the wickets of Martin Bicknell, Saqlain Mushtaq and Tim Murtagh as Surrey were skittled for 243.

Meanwhile, Alex Tudor is the latest Surrey international struggling to be fit for Saturday's B&H Cup Final against Gloucestershire at Lord's.

The fast bowler suffered a side strain in last weekend's championship meeting with Leicester-shire and failed to recover in time to take part in today's contest.

That meant a Surrey call-up for 19-year-old seamer Tim Murtagh.
