Melbourne Rebels have revealed Danny Cipriani was unable to attend a media day on Tuesday because he is still awaiting a visa before he can fly to Australia.

The new Super 15 franchise had hoped to unveil their star signing, but they downplayed any speculation the player may be reconsidering his options.

"Danny's paperwork for a visa has still not been processed," Rebels head of media Greg Thomas told Sky Sports News. "He therefore couldn't get on a plane, so he couldn't be a part of the Rebels' opening media day. It is disappointing but we have been assured Danny will be on his way as soon as possible."

He added: "It shouldn't be very long. We have been told that the paperwork has now been submitted and we expect a quick turnaround on that."

Thomas added that Cipriani's late arrival was unlikely to have a major impact, with the club only due to start pre-season training next week.

"The season itself doesn't start until February. We are only in the initial stages of our pre-season with early medicals for the players," said Thomas.

"Training does not start in earnest until next week. It is not a major setback, it's just a little disappointing that Danny is not here.

"We've had honest discussions with Danny and his management over the past few days and we're confident this will be put to bed soon.

"He's looking forward to playing for the Melbourne Rebels in a newly-formatted competition next year.

"We're looking forward to seeing him down here."
