Ref hits back over rugby bets probe

Controversial rugby referee Andre Watson today dismissed suggestions that officials at the 2003 World Cup had been influenced by a betting syndicate.

Watson, whose handling of England's win over Australia in the final drew criticism after he awarded penalties at key times, said he could not believe the International Rugby Board were looking into the performances of World Cup referees after officials noted several debatable decisions.

It was reported in Australia today that the IRB were looking into three matches involving three different referees.

But the South African said: "Never in my life has any syndicate or any person involved in betting ever approached me. I think it must be a hoax call because I think it's impossible to sway a game."
