Referee's attacker speaks out

13 April 2012

Disgraced Springbok rugby fan Pieter van Zyl has vowed to fight any attempts by the rugby authorities to impose a life ban on him.

The 43-year-old, who tackled Irish referee David McHugh during Saturday's Tri-Nations match between South Africa and New Zealand in Durban, broke his silence for the first time in Rustenburg.

Flanked by his legal council, van Zyl said: "As far as I am concerned there is no interdict, court order or any other legal way of stopping me from attending a rugby match in South Africa. If there is any, I will oppose it in the strongest possible way."
