Robinson still number one - Foster

12 April 2012

Ben Foster believes Paul Robinson should continue as England's number one goalkeeper despite the horror goal the Tottenham man conceded in Croatia.

Robinson came in for some criticism after he missed his attempt to clear Gary Neville's back pass downfield, allowing the ball to trickle into the net and give Croatia a decisive 2-0 lead in Zagreb in the Euro 2008 qualifier.

Watford goalkeeper Foster, on-loan from Manchester United, told www.thefa.com: "If I get my chance in the next game then brilliant, but I'm not going to be too disappointed if it doesn't happen. I'd like to think I won't get my England chance just because of what happened to Paul - that could have happened to anyone."

He added: "I thought Paul was our best player in that game and I don't think he could do anything about that incident. I spoke to him after the game and told him he was different class.

"Paul is a great goalkeeper. He is number one and I'm number three at the moment and I can accept that because he has been doing well."
