Robinson the inspiration for Hape

Former New Zealand rugby league international Shontayne Hape is determined to follow in the England footsteps of Jason Robinson after being selected to make his Test debut against Australia on Saturday.

The Bath centre will become the third ex-Kiwi to play Test rugby for England after Henry Paul and Lesley Vainikolo, who both failed to make the grade. But Robinson retired as one of the most successful cross-code recruits in the history of the game having won 51 caps for England, five for the Lions and a World Cup-winner's medal.

"I look to guys like Jason Robinson who switched codes and went on to do great things," said Hape. "I look to him for inspiration. I have looked at what he achieved and got out of the game."

He added: "Being picked for England is one of the highest honours and greatest things any rugby player in England can do.

"I am really chuffed and honoured. It is a great feeling for myself and for my family and friends back in England. I am really looking forward to it."

Hape won 14 caps for the Kiwis before switching codes in 2008 to join Bath from Super League club Bradford Bulls and he was immediately on England's radar.

The 29-year-old was in line to make his Test debut against Wales during the Six Nations, just weeks after qualifying for England on residency grounds, before falling ill on the eve of the game.

"I have been very impressed with him. He's a very smart carrier with the ball in hand. He's one of those guys that seems to have a bit more time than most, he's very composed," said England manager Martin Johnson.
