Roeder can see a lethal strike force

West Ham manager Glenn Roeder believes the blossoming striking partnership of Frederic Kanoute and Jermain Defoe could develop into one of the most lethal in the Premiership.

Roeder though, admitted that two successive away defeats - including Saturday's 3-1 loss to Newcastle - have left north London rivals Tottenham as favourites to snatch the prestigious seventh spot in the final Premiership table.

"It's out of our hands now," said Roeder. "We must beat Bolton at home on the final day and hope that Spurs fail to beat Leicester, otherwise they will just pip us for that seventh spot.

"There were still positives to be drawn from the defeat by Newcastle though. I thought the first half was the best we've played away from home all season and the partnership between Freddie and Jermain looks really exciting for the future. They linked up well for Jermain's goal and could have scored several others."

The burgeoning partnership between the pair could mean the end for Paolo Di Canio.

West Ham would be unlikely to stand in the Italian striker's way should Manchester United renew their interest during the close season.
