Roeder: Old boy Rio thwarted us

13 April 2012

Glenn Roeder said that Rio Ferdinand "came back to haunt" West Ham as he denied his old club victory over Leeds.

Ferdinand cleared a Paolo di Canio shot off the line towards the end of the game to deny his old club.

That was enough to force both sides to settle for a point and ruin Leeds' 100 per cent record.

And Roeder said: "Both Paulo and I thought that shot was in and how ironic it was Rio who cleared it away. For me, he looks cheap at £18million. He came back to haunt us.

"David O'Leary knew what he was buying when he signed Rio, but he has done well in the transfer market with such buys as Viduka, Olivier Dacourt and Ferdinand, to name just three.

"But after two good performances to start the season, we've only won one point, although I hope this first augurs well for us. We have certainly set a benchmark."
