Ronaldo: Now I am after gold

Ronaldo has targetted a new dream of an Olympic gold medal after winning the Golden Boot and shooting Brazil to a 2-0 victory over Germany in the World Cup Final here in Yokohama.

The striker has nothing left to prove after scoring the two goals which sank the Germans and inspired Brazil to a record fifth World Cup triumph.

His eight goals gave him the Golden Boot as the top scorer in the competition, a tally better than any striker since Gerd Muller in 1970, while tomorrow he is the favourite to be named as the winner of the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player for the second time running.

Yet Ronaldo revealed that his ambition has not dimmed and that the golden prize he'd like to win most is of the Olympic variety in Athens in two years time.

It has become almost an obsession for Brazil to lift the Olympic crown after several near misses. There was national misery when they were beaten by Cameroon in Sydney, while it is only now that Rivaldo has become a world champion will he be forgiven for the careless pass which gifted Nigeria victory in Atlanta.

The competition is for under-23s but provision is made for teams to use three over-age players. After his man-of-the-match performance yesterday Ronaldo said: "I'm very ambitious and the Olympics is a great objective for me."

Now that the Yokohama triumph has banished his traumatic memories of his 1998 Final flop in Paris, Ronaldo says he also has other targets.

In Germany in 2006, he will still only be 29 but needs only one goal to move ahead of Pele as Brazil's all-time top scorer in World Cup finals with 13. If he scores 15, he will have topped Muller as the most prolific scorer in the history of the competition.
