Ross Fisher lands big prize and heads for gym

Final fling: champion Ross Fisher and Anthony Kim

New World Match Play champion Ross Fisher knows there is a lot more hard work ahead after claiming his first title in nearly 15 months.

The 28-year-old from Wentworth beat American Anthony Kim 4&3 in yesterday's 36-hole final at the Finca Cortesin course in Spain to land the £675,700 prize.

If he wins this week's HSBC Champions - he was beaten by Phil Mickelson in a play-off two years ago after taking a seven on the final hole - he could go top of the European Order of Merit with only two more weeks remaining.

Fisher said: "I'm absolutely ecstatic. It's been a long, gruelling week but obviously worthwhile.

"This course was very physically demanding and I don't think I am the fittest of blokes out here. I know I need to work a lot more in the gym."

Meanwhile, Ian Poulter is up to a career-high 15th in the world after a hard-fought one-stroke victory at the Barclays Singapore Open.

After a six-week break, Poulter even surprised himself by how well he played at Sentosa Golf Club to edge out China's Liang Wen-chong and claim his first title in two years.

He said: "When I am hitting the ball well, I am hitting it as good as I have ever hit it - there are certain shots that I hit this week that I was very happy with."
