Royle's reign at City is over

13 April 2012

Joe Royle today left Manchester City by mutual consent following their relegation to the First Division.

Maine Road chairman David Bernstein had claimed Royle's position was safe immediately following the club relegation to the Nationwide League after only one season back in the top flight.

But he said today: "My relationship with Joe has been outstanding and I have developed a real affection for him and his family.

"However, our review of last year and recent discussions with Joe have revealed fundamental differences of views regarding future direction.

"I believe to move forward successfully we need a progressive strategy, both to regain our Premiership status and to compete more successfully than during the season just ended.

"I truly wish Joe every success in the future."

Royle, 52, did not initially comment but League Managers' Association chairman John Barnwell said: "People have short memories.

"He has done a fantastic job under very difficult circumstances."
