Saracens fly-half Charlie Hodgson has had surgery after fracturing his cheekbone against London Wasps.

The former England back will be sidelined “for a number of weeks”, according to the club.

His outstanding form has helped guide Sarries into second place in the Aviva Premiership and underpinned an unbeaten start to their Heineken Cup campaign.Hodgson was hurt in the final stages of Sunday’s game and the club fear he could struggle to play again before Christmas, although they have not put an exact timescale on his recovery.

The 31-year-old joined Saracens from Sale Sharks and won 36 England caps.

He retired from Test rugby earlier this year.
