Gavin Henson targeted as Exiles’ hopes hang in the balance

Gavin Henson has been approached by a number of French and Premiership clubs about a potential move away from London Welsh this summer.

The Exiles are favourites for relegation after losing their appeal on Tuesday against a five-point deduction for fielding ineligible scrum-half Tyson Keats.

Henson is in discussions about extending his stay at Welsh and is said to be happy at the club and fully committed to their fight for survival.

But there is already interest in the high-profile Welshman and that will intensify if the Oxford-based club go down after just one season in the Premiership.

And although his stock has fallen since hitting the heights with Wales in 2005, some clubs appear ready to take a punt on the 31-year-old.

The former Lions back played in France in 2011 but during an ill‑fated four months with Toulon he was given a week’s ban for an alleged bust-up with team-mates although the club later dropped the punishment.

Henson, who has kicked 72 points in 11 appearances this campaign, has also had spells with Cardiff Blues and Saracens.

London Welsh , who are five points adrift of 11th-placed Sale, travel to Bath on Saturday. The Exiles won 16-9 when the teams met at Oxford in November.
